    Mary McDougall's simple and healthy marinara sauce that's been a family favorite for over thirty years.

    This is simple, healthy and really tasty. This may be made ahead and reheated. It also freezes well.

    Ingredients

    • 2 Tbsp water
    • 2 onions, chopped
    • 4 cloves garlic, crushed
    • ½ pound mushrooms, chopped
    • 2-15 ounce cans tomato sauce
    • 15 ounce can chopped tomatoes
    • 1½ Tbsp parsley flakes
    • 2 tsp oregano
    • 1 tsp basil
    • Dash of salt, if desired

    Instructions

    1. 1Place the water, onions, garlic and mushrooms in a large pot.
    2. 2Cook, stirring frequently, until onions soften and begin to take on a golden color, about 10 minutes.
    3. 3Stir in remaining ingredients.
    4. 4Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally. DO NOT COVER.
    5. 5Serve over your choice of pasta.
