How Do You Discover Your Superpower?
By Suzanne
After writing my last blog #74 I find superpowers still rattling around in my head. So, if they are real how do we discover them? The more I thought about it, the more I realized something surprising. Most people do not find their superpower. Other people find it first.
WHY?
Because our superpowers feel completely normal to us. We assume everyone can do what we do, think the way we do, see what we see. But, they do not.
For example I recently realized that consistency may be one of my super powers. Not because I set out to develop it. It simply happened through years of showing up daily, walking, exercising, learning, writing, trying, failing, trying again. I showed up every single day, non-negotiable, I told myself. To me, it felt ordinary. To others it appeared remarkable. That got me wondering.
How many of our strengths are hiding in plain sight?
If you are curious about your own superpower, here are a few clues.
People keep coming to you for the same thing.
Maybe they seek your advice.
Maybe they trust you with their problems.
Maybe they ask you to help them organize stuff.
Maybe they call you when they need encouragement.
I say, keep your eyes wide open. Pay attention. Patterns matter.
It feels easy to you.
This is the biggest clue of all.
We tend to value things that are difficult.
But superpowers often feel effortless. You may dismiss them because they come naturally.
How about? You have been doing it your whole life?
Think back. What have you always done?
What role do you naturally assume in groups?
The peacemaker?
The encourager?
The organizer?
The connector?
The problem solver?
The listener?
The dreamer?
Other people notice it before you do. Sometimes the people around us can see our strengths more clearly than we can.
When several people tell you the same thing over the years, it might be worth listening to.
You lose track of time when you are doing it.
Superpowers often live at the intersection of ability and joy. Not always but often. You become absorbed. Engaged. Energized. You do it because you enjoy it. Not because you have to.
As I am writing and thinking about all of this, I am beginning to believe that discovering your superpower is not about becoming someone new. Nope. It is about recognizing who you have been all along. Perhaps the clues have been there for years. Perhaps you have been overlooking them because they feel too ordinary.
And how about this? Perhaps the very thing you take for granted is the thing that makes you extraordinary.
Maybe your superpower is not hiding after all.
Maybe it has been waving at you all along,
