    And Just Like That…

    By Suzanne

Lately I have noticed people using the phrase, “And just like that…” At first it just sounded like another catchy expression. But the more I heard it, the more I found myself thinking.

Does anything really happen, just like that?

I guess people do say things like, “And just like that, the kids were grown,” or “I retired,” or “I was 84, and just like that, life was different.”

    But was it?

Or did it just happen one ordinary Tuesday at a time? One birthday, one walk, one conversation, one tiny decision, one unnoticed moment after another. Then one day we looked up and thought, “Well, and just like that…”

The truth is, life doesn’t usually change in giant leaps. It changes quietly. Silently. Patiently. Until one day the evidence is hard to ignore.

I actually think confidence grows this way. Not after one brave act. Nope. After dozens of small ones.

Relationships kind of grow this way also. Not because of one grand gesture, but because of thousands of ordinary moments of showing up for someone.

Health works this way too. No one salad changes your life.

No single walk transforms your body.

No one night’s sleep turns everything around.

On the flip side, if you keep stacking those ordinary moments, well then maybe, “And just like that… your cholesterol is lower, your balance is better, you have more energy, and you feel hopeful again.”

It wasn’t magic. It was an accumulation.

Even courage arrives this way. The first conversation feels awkward. The second is a little easier. The tenth feels almost natural. Then someone says, “You’re so confident.” And you smile. Because you know they missed the hundreds of tiny moments that built it.

Maybe that is why I love paying attention to ordinary life. Ya know why? Because ordinary life is where extraordinary things quietly begin.

This all reminds me that I don’t have to change everything today. I simply have to keep adding one more good moment to the pile. Just one thing at a time. One more walk, one more healthy meal, one more uncomfortable conversation, one more act of kindness. Just one more nudge toward the person I hope to become.

Eventually those moments become life. And one day, almost without realizing it, I’ll look back and smile.

    “And just like that…”

Except I will know the truth. It wasn’t just like that. It was every little moment that came before. And perhaps that is the most hopeful thought of all. Because if tiny moments quietly create the life we are living, well then it follows that the tiny moments we choose today are already creating tomorrow.
